The Thimble...

Grandma Freda has always been so giving of her time. She has made service to others a huge priority in her life with church, 4-H, voting work. Even with her quilting; something that she enjoys very much, she serves others. She has ladies aid at church every other week, where they sew together and make blankets for kids. I love that every time I come over she has a quilt that she is working on to show us. Over the years, she has had the same couple of pin cushions. This one has been around as long as I have, and probably longer. But it isn't all those pins and the cushion that are special, it is that thimble on top. It was her moms thimble. She told me that it is a real nice thimble, but their are two small holes in it that every now and again, the needle finds it way through. She told me two weeks ago, and when we were there this week, I saw the thimble at rest, and decided that it should be in a scrapbook with the story of the two holes. No sense in getting a new one when this one only has a few holes....... maybe that poke every once in awhile keeps her awake.
You know someone quilts a lot when they are wearing out metal thimbles. I know someday when the boys are grown I am going to have the opportunity to carry on some of these traditions that have been in our family. I just hope I remember how when the time comes...
